Margaret Sawyers m. James Dyer Jr. 1837. b. 1799.

James was the first superintendent of Webster Co. free schools after

the end of the Civil War. James was enthusiatic over the idea

of bettering the school facilities of Webster Co. With only a salary

of fifty dollars a year, he built a log schoolhouse on his farm, hired a

teacher at his own expense for the benefit of his children and those of

his neighbors. Spelling, reading, writing and arithmetic were the

subjects taught.
